Linda Bustos of Get Elastic has two excellent posts that discuss the use of Facebook connect. The first article listed below perfectly illustrates how to properly implement Facebook connect on ecommerce websites and increase the likelihood that your visitors will use it on your website.
http://www.getelastic.com/facebook-connect-best-practicesThe second article is more general overview of Facebook connect, and why you may or may not want to use it. One of the best reasons to use FB connect for conversion is to help offer more personalized experiences based on visitors' activity (and of course leverage the viral power of social media). One of the most interesting takeaways from the article is the list of reasons why you may not want to use Facebook connect:
- Facebook's history with protecting user information (or lack thereof).
- User information could potentially be incomplete or inaccurate.
- Not being able access or obtain certain information about your visitors that you need to further engage your visitors (e.g. account number or mobile phone number).
As with most things, I think the best approach to using Facebook connect is making sure you don't rely entirely on it to connect with visitors. It is just one more conduit for converting visitors into customers.
